  • Transformable furniture solutions

Pivoting and lateral sliding systems for kitchens, home offices and multifunctional spaces

Pocket door systems, in which the doors pivot and slide into the furniture, are becoming increasingly popular because they allow functional areas of the home to remain visible only when they are in use. Once opened, the doors turn and slide into a narrow pocket at the side of the cabinet, so they do not obstruct walkways, worktops or the cabinet interior.

In this way, an open kitchen, coffee station, home office, laundry area, wardrobe or bar cabinet can disappear behind flush furniture fronts within seconds. When the doors are closed, the result is a calm, continuous wall surface suited to both minimalist and classic interiors.

Why are pocket door systems becoming increasingly popular?

Contemporary homes are no longer divided as strictly into separate kitchen, living, work and leisure rooms. One space often serves several functions and changes throughout the day: in the morning it may be used for breakfast and work, in the evening as a living room, and at weekends as a space for guests.

A pocket door system allows such a room to transform without changing its layout. The function remains immediately accessible when needed, while an unused work zone can be hidden in seconds. This helps maintain visual order and reduces the need to dedicate a separate room to every activity.

The doors do not get in the way

When open, the doors slide completely into the side pocket of the cabinet, leaving the worktop, shelves, appliances and walkway unobstructed.

The functional zone can be hidden quickly

Kitchen appliances, unfinished work, documents and everyday items disappear behind a continuous front without having to be moved elsewhere.

The space looks larger and calmer

A closed, flush furniture wall reduces visual clutter and helps an open-plan kitchen and living area feel more composed.

    01

    Concealed kitchen

A worktop, sink, small appliances, coffee station or even an entire compact kitchen can be installed behind pocket doors. When opened, the work surface remains fully accessible.

    02

Home office in the living room

During the working day, the cabinet becomes a complete workspace with a monitor, shelving and lighting. When work is finished, the office equipment disappears behind flush fronts.

    03

    Coffee, bar or breakfast station

A coffee machine, tableware, drinks and accessories can be stored in one open niche that remains completely unobstructed while in use.

    04

    Laundry or utility zone

A washing machine, dryer, cleaning products or household tools can be concealed in a hallway, bathroom or shared living space.

More freedom in furniture and interior design

Pocket doors can use exactly the same fronts as neighbouring cabinets. This allows the concealed functional area to blend completely into a bank of tall units, wall panelling or living-room furniture. Both handled and handleless designs are possible, from half-height installations to full-height floor-to-ceiling fronts.

HAWA Concepta III – premium pocket door technology

    Swiss technology

    HAWA Concepta III

HAWA Concepta III is a system for wooden doors that first pivot by 90° and then slide almost completely into a pocket at the side of the cabinet or wall. Once the cabinet is open, the doors are no longer positioned in front of it and the entire interior remains freely accessible.

Compared with conventional hinged doors, Concepta III does not occupy room space or obstruct the worktop. Compared with simpler pocket-door alternatives, it stands out for its finely balanced movement, broader range of usable front dimensions, precise adjustment and a component system developed for professional furniture projects.

    • Doors pivot by 90° and slide fully into the side pocket.
    • Open doors do not obstruct the worktop, shelving or cabinet interior.
    • PULL versions are available for handled fronts and PUSH versions for handleless designs.
    • Suitable for doors 18–26 mm thick and 350–750 mm wide.
    • Front heights from 1200 to 2700 mm can be designed.
    • Depending on the version, supported door weights are 6–25 kg or 10–35 kg.
    • The precisely balanced mechanism requires very little force and provides smooth, even movement.
    • A high degree of pre-assembly reduces installation time and the number of tools required.
    • Adjustment points remain easily accessible from the front, so the door can be fine-tuned even after installation.
    • HAWA Concepta III can be combined with HAWA Folding Concepta III for larger two-, three- or four-door fronts.

PULL or PUSH – which HAWA Concepta III version should you choose?

    PULL

    Concepta III PULL

The door is opened and brought out with a gentle pull on the handle or edge of the front. Choose this version when the handle is an intentional part of the furniture design or when you prefer clear mechanical feedback.

What should be considered before designing pocket doors?

Choose the system before manufacturing the cabinet carcass

A pocket-door mechanism requires a dedicated side pocket, so it should be planned at the furniture-design stage. Retrofitting an already manufactured standard cabinet can be difficult or impossible.

Door height, width, thickness and weight, pocket depth, carcass construction and installation side all need to be checked precisely. There must also be enough space in front of the furniture for the door to open by 90° before sliding into the pocket.

If the concealed zone includes a worktop with electrical appliances, lighting, a sink or home-office equipment, plan power outlets, cable routing, ventilation and safe clearances from moving components in advance.
