Furniture hinges – how to choose the right ones?

Furniture hinges are one of the most important components of cabinet door hardware. They determine how easily the doors open, how accurately they align with the cabinet and how long the furniture remains comfortable to use. Properly selected hinges help ensure stable door movement, precise adjustment and quiet closing.

The Furnitanas range includes standard and special-purpose cabinet hinges for kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, bedrooms, offices and other cabinet furniture. You can choose hinges for full-overlay, half-overlay and inset doors, models with soft closing, hinges for handleless furniture, as well as solutions for thin, thick, glass or aluminium-frame fronts.

The most important selection rule: a hinge should be chosen not only by its opening angle, but also by the position of the door in relation to the cabinet, the thickness, material and weight of the front, the installation angle and the preferred closing method.

    How to choose furniture hinges?

Before choosing hinges, it is advisable to consider the following criteria:

    • Door position: whether the front is full-overlay, half-overlay or installed inside the cabinet opening.
    • Front thickness and material: standard furniture board, MDF, thin front, thick front, glass, mirror or aluminium frame.
    • Opening angle: for example 95°, 100°, 110°, 120°, 155°, 160° or 170°.
    • Closing method: with a spring, integrated damper, add-on damper or without a spring.
    • Furniture construction: whether the doors must clear internal drawers, pull-out baskets or other furniture fittings.
    • Frequency of use: reliable, precisely adjustable hinges are recommended for frequently used kitchen and bathroom furniture.

    Main types of furniture hinges

    Full-overlay, half-overlay and inset hinges

Full-overlay hinges are used when the closed door covers the entire cabinet side panel. Half-overlay hinges are used when two doors share one cabinet partition and each covers only part of its edge. Inset hinges are required when the front is installed inside the cabinet opening.

    Soft-close hinges

Soft-close hinges use an integrated or add-on damper. It slows the door immediately before closing, allowing it to close quietly and without a hard impact. This is a particularly practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms and frequently used living-area furniture.

    Hinges for handleless furniture

Furniture with a mechanical or electronic opening system usually uses unsprung hinges. They do not pull the door into the closed position and can therefore be combined with magnetic or mechanical Push-to-Open push latches. The specific combination of hinge and push latch must be selected according to the dimensions and weight of the front.

    Wide-angle and zero-protrusion hinges

Wide-opening hinges allow the door to open further and make the cabinet interior easier to access. Zero-protrusion or pull-away hinges move the front away from the cabinet side while opening, helping the door clear internal drawers or pull-out systems.

    Hinges for special fronts

Specially designed hinges are used for thin, thick, glass, mirrored and aluminium-frame fronts. When choosing a hinge, check the front thickness specified by the manufacturer, the fixing method, the permitted door weight and the required drilling pattern.

    Most popular hinge categories

GRASS Tiomos, GRASS Nexis or Titus – which hinges should you choose?

All three hinge ranges can be used for high-quality cabinet furniture, but they differ in construction, adjustment options, closing technology and price segment. The table below summarises the main differences and helps you choose the most suitable solution.

Comparison criterion GRASS Tiomos GRASS Nexis Titus
Main application Premium furniture where precise adjustment, integrated soft closing and a wide range of specialist hinges are important. Standard and special-construction furniture requiring a reliable solution at a reasonable price. Cabinet furniture across different market segments, from economical B-type to more functional T-type models.
Adjustment 4D adjustment: height, depth, side and damping-effect adjustment. Integrated 3D adjustment for aligning the front in three directions. Depends on the selected hinge family, model and mounting plate.
Soft closing Tiomos models may include an integrated adaptive damper whose action can be adjusted to suit the door. Models without damping are available, or an add-on Soft Close damper can be fitted to the hinge. Depending on the model, damping may be integrated, hinge-mounted or provided as a separate solution.
Mounting on the plate Fast clip-on attachment to a compatible mounting plate. Click-on system – the hinge clips onto the mounting plate. T-type hinges use 3Way Snap-on mounting, while B-type models use the Slide-on system.
Opening angles A broad range of standard, corner, wide-angle and special-purpose models. The range includes models with different opening angles, including 100°, 125° and 170° hinges. The opening angle depends on the model; standard and wide-opening hinges are available.
Special fronts Solutions are available for thin, thick, glass, aluminium-frame, corner and other non-standard fronts. Standard, corner, glass, bi-fold-door and other specialised models are available. The choice depends on the specific Titus hinge family and model.
Price segment Higher – focused on enhanced functionality and comfort. Mid-range or more economical – a good balance of functionality and price. Broad – from economical models to hinges with higher functionality.
When is it worth choosing? When integrated soft closing, precise front adjustment and long-term comfort are important. When you need a reliable, versatile and cost-effective solution. When you want to select hinges according to a specific budget, mounting method and damping requirement.

Note: the specific hinge features, opening angle, adjustment range, front thickness and damping method depend on the selected model. Before ordering, check the technical description of the specific product.

When should you choose GRASS Tiomos?

GRASS Tiomos hinges are recommended when furniture must meet higher requirements for comfort, adjustment precision and design. The integrated adaptive damping mechanism helps adjust the door-closing force, while 4D adjustment allows accurate alignment of the fronts.

The Tiomos range includes solutions for standard, thin, thick, corner, glass, aluminium-frame, bi-fold and other types of doors. It is a suitable choice for kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms and other furniture used intensively.

When should you choose GRASS Nexis?

GRASS Nexis hinges are suitable when you need a reliable and versatile solution at a reasonable price. Nexis hinges offer 3D adjustment and a Click-on mounting system that helps attach the hinge quickly to the mounting plate.

Depending on the selected model, Nexis hinges can be used for standard, inset, half-overlay, corner, glass or bi-fold doors. When quiet closing is required, a compatible Soft Close damper can be fitted additionally.

When should you choose Titus hinges?

The Titus hinge category includes solutions with different levels of functionality. T-type hinges feature the fast 3Way Snap-on mounting system, while B-type models use a simple Slide-on attachment.

Depending on the specific Titus model, you can choose an integrated, hinge-mounted or separate soft-close solution. Titus hinges can therefore be used in both economical furniture projects and projects requiring greater functionality.
